Foster connection. Reclaim reverence. Grow good.

  • Sitting on Sundays

It’s a one-hour, once-a-week, good for the soul practice with good for the soul people. Online.

  • Classes, Courses and Workshops

The Enneagram is a foundational teaching at Big Stone House. So is old-school contemplative wisdom taught in new, meaningful ways. We offer online classes, courses, workshops and trainings on these subjects and more, feeding the mind as a way to feed the soul.

  • One-on-One Coaching and Counsel

It’s good for the soul to sift and sort through life’s highs and lows from time to time. We do that kind of thing here: walking with folks through life’s heavier moments, providing practices for growth as a leader or parent or partner or simply as a plain ol’ human, and offering personal insights into the teachings of the Enneagram…and ways to turn those insights into practices for good in everyday, ordinary life.

  • In person workshops and retreats.

We are grateful for Zoom and all of the ways it keeps us connected across the miles. What a gift to get together across the screen, eh? That said, there’s nothing like learning and practicing together in person…it’s so good. Therefore we are taking Big Stone House on the road in 2026 to meet with folks face to face for a few classes, some good practices, and some great connection with great people. Stay tuned!

  • Rituals for Marking Life's Big Moments

Classes and conversations at Big Stone House are generally gears to help people find a bit more awe in the everyday stuff of life. Reverence for the ordinary things of our days is simply good for the soul (and our hearts and for our relationships, too). We also work with people to mark life’s bigger moments with intention and attention, paying attention to the sacred time of these transitions: weddings, funerals, babies-being-born, the addition of a pup to the family, moving to a new home, ending a relationship…offering a bit of thanks for what is and a blessing for what is to come.

At Big Stone House we wrestle with, wonder about, and practice the kinds of things that make this world (and our own selves, too) a little more human.

It’s a simple practice. Sitting on Sundays sparks curiosity, connects people in community, and gives folks of all kinds the courage to find and fuel things like joy and hope and belonging in the grief and gunk of our days...no matter what. Reverence, it reminds us of. Good, it grows.

Sitting on Sundays

It’s a one hour, once a week, online practice that is about as good for the soul as anything we’ve ever experienced. “A seed planter for hope and connection,” says one long-time participant. “A mashup of a good AA meeting, Quaker meeting, and Zen sit with a bit of hootenanny thrown in sometimes for good measure…” says another. “It’s the best part of my week,” says another. Online. Ongoing.

It’s part class, part conversation, part connection—an excuse invitation to talk and wonder about some of the bigger topics of life for a little while…the kinds of topics that tug on us from time to time but we rarely pause to wrestle with or wonder about. That’s what happens at…

Not Another Book Group Book Group

In previous sessions of NABGBG, we’ve considered, looked for, and wrestled with topics like hope, grief, grace, prayer, sacred…and so much more. This time around? We’re wondering about ritual and revival—it’s a new year, after all. “From Beginning to End: the Rituals of Our Lives” will start our conversations on the how, what, and why paying attention matters…and practices to help us make some meaning in these days, curate connection. We can’t promise hard-and-fast, once-and-for-all answers to the questions that might come up but we can promise insights that will shape all of us for the better. And being shaped for the better is a good thing.

Online (Zoom).

Tuesdays January 6, January 20 and February 3 from 7 to 8:30p (Eastern)

(that’s 6-7p Central, 5-6p Mountain, 4-5p Pacific).

Here’s what people say about Big Stone House…

  • "What can I say about Sitting on Sundays? It’s nourishment in a world of fast-food and disconnection. It’s a space that reminds me that I am more than what I do. It connects me to people around the world who also see the wonder in this life, and who live with gratitude and joy, but need reminding of that every so often. We need this weekly time to sit with ourselves and each other, to knit back together our sense of connection to one another, to sit in joy and sadness, to share the highs and lows of life… this is what Sitting on Sundays has given me over the five or six years I’ve been doing this with Angie and Peter. It’s not an optional part of my self care routine; it’s vital to my sense of being human, to stay connected to myself."

—Trudy Chapman, BAH, MA, PCC, President at Chapman Coaching, Inc. and podcaster (“Meanderings with Trudy”)

  • “Thank you so, so much for doing this work. It matters a great deal and helps me dig deeper into big life questions and learn more about the human spirit, about coaching... and about living. You (Angie) and Peter are so much more than talented teachers or experienced professionals; you walk your talk, every step of the way, create a powerful learning and sharing experience, and make the learning come alive. Thank you...”

—Catherine Morisset, PCC-ICF Professional Certified Coach; CLC-ILCT Certified Life Coach, BCC-CCE Board-Certified Coach, BA Psychology UO

  • Angie took the time to get to know us and crafted a ceremony that was both traditional and deeply personal. I can't imagine anyone else marrying us...we still tear up at the beauty of her words.

—Nicki Gallo Affleck, married to Angus Affleck

  • I didn't know how much I needed this until I was here. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

  • “Using the Enneagram in the Workplace was a very deep learning experience. The depth of exploration and application to life and coaching were more than I expected. Angie and Peter are big-hearted teachers and they have created a truly special community of learners at the Big Stone House. Everything was wonderful. Venue is superb, food was tasty, the materials were helpful and plentiful. The community of learners is very rich… (I am) looking forward to what comes next …”

  • More online workshops and in person events are in the works for 2026. Join us early in the year for More Than a Number: an introduction (or a re-introduction) to the Enneagram. In late Spring, Angie and Peter will bring The Enneagram of Belonging (an in person workshop/retreat) to the Ottawa, Ontario area. And take a look above: Not Another Book Group Book Group is making a return to The House…stay tuned!

  • Angie Arendt and Peter McGaugh can both be found on Substack. The Bigger Picture is Angie’s column. Peter’s writings can be found at Elevating Human Decency. Check out their columns. Comment if you can. And follow along, if you are so inclined.

  • For the past five years, Angie has been a regular guest on Meanderings with Trudy: The PauseCast. Trudy Chapman is the host of Meanderings with Trudy, doing what she can to bring about a bit more joy in the day to day. Angie and Trudy talk about, chew on, and wrestle with things like grace, hope, joy, and grief and every now and again offer up insights about what it is to be human through the lens of the Enneagram. Pour yourself a cup and listen in when you can. It’ll be good to have you there (the link here is to their episode on The Enneagram and Connection).
